Sri Lankan apparel enters China's high-end market In recent times, Sri Lanka's garment manufacturers have their eyes locked in China's high-end consumer market. From 2010 to 2012, Sri Lanka’s total annual export of clothing to China has increased by 20 times from US$700,000 to US$15 million. Under such a good momentum, Sri Lanka's garment industry plans to further tap into the business opportunities in the high-end market in China in terms of improving design and product quality.

For Sri Lanka's apparel industry, the new opportunity in the Chinese market comes from the expansion of high-spending consumers. A statement issued by the Jafa Federation of Garments (jaaf) stated: "The growth of gdp and the increase in per capita income have made China's middle class expand."

According to Hirdaramani Group, Sri Lanka’s leading apparel manufacturer, there are two ways for Sri Lankan companies to enter the Chinese market. “One is to directly become a manufacturer of high-end brands in China, and the other is to look deeper into China in our customer base. The international brand of the market has used its channels to deepen market development.” The jaaf representative added that the apparel industry hopes to take advantage of the opportunities for China and Sri Lanka to strengthen economic cooperation and expand exports to China.

According to jaaf's plan, Sri Lanka’s garment export target is to achieve an annual export volume of 5 billion US dollars by 2016. The jaaf representative pointed out that although China is an important garment exporter in the world, its clothing imports have also shown a growth trend, with clothing imports increasing from 2.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2010 to 4 billion U.S. dollars in 2012. Sri Lankan industry insiders hope that the growth of China's exports can be a strong support for reaching the goal. To promote the annual export of Sri Lankan garments from the current 3.8 billion US dollars to 5 billion US dollars.

In recent years, the clothing industry in Sri Lanka has gradually changed its direction of development. The country has significantly reduced its supply to the low-end market. At the end of this year, the first Sri Lankan Fashion and Apparel Awards (slfaa) will be announced at the 5th Sri Lanka Design Festival. By then, people's eyes will focus on local fashion brands and creative designers. Linda speldewinde, founder and managing director of the Sri Lanka Design Festival, explained: “Our apparel industry is linking sustainable design with fashion trends and is concerned about the production of the entire apparel industry chain.” According to her, earlier this year, Some Sri Lankan fashion brands have been selected for display at London Fashion Week. The hirdaramani Group stated: "As a manufacturer of high-end clothing, we will focus on the two retail markets in India and China in the future."
