In 2010, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China released the first batch of industry standard formulation and revision plans. Among these, eight clothing-related standards were set to be developed or updated, including knitted thermal underwear, knitted shirts, casual knitted garments, garment CAD specifications, cleanroom clothing (covering three related standards), and jacket standards. These updates reflect a growing emphasis on quality, safety, and technological alignment within the Chinese textile industry.
In recent years, as China’s garment industry faces increasing technical barriers from developed countries, efforts have been made to align national standards with international regulations—especially those concerning eco-friendly textiles. This includes incorporating stricter environmental protection measures, safety protocols, and health-related requirements. By adopting global best practices, China aims to enhance the competitiveness of its textile exports in international markets.
One of the key standards is the jacket specification, which was first introduced in 1981. It underwent revisions in 1994 and again in 2004. The 2004 update introduced more stringent limits on formaldehyde content and pH levels for finished products, reflecting a stronger focus on consumer safety. Industry experts suggest that while the overall direction of the next revision will remain consistent, certain details and performance indicators may be adjusted to improve clarity and practicality. The goal is to highlight critical aspects of the standard without compromising its core objectives. The third revision plan is expected to be finalized by the end of this year, marking an important step forward in the evolution of China’s garment industry standards.
