In 2010, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China released the first batch of industry standard formulation and revision plans. This initiative included the development or updating of eight clothing-related standards, such as knitted thermal undergarments, knitted shirts, casual knitted wear, garment CAD specifications, cleanroom clothing (covering three related standards), and jacket standards. These updates aimed to align China's textile industry with international benchmarks and enhance product quality and safety.
In recent years, as Chinese manufacturers face increasing technical barriers to trade from developed countries, the country has made efforts to revise its garment industry standards by referencing advanced regulations from these regions. Emphasis has been placed on eco-friendly textiles, with particular attention given to environmental protection, safety, and health requirements. This shift reflects a broader strategy to ensure that Chinese-made garments meet global expectations and remain competitive in international markets.
Among the updated standards, the jacket standard was first introduced in 1981 and underwent revisions in 1994 and 2004. The 2004 update introduced stricter limits on formaldehyde content and pH levels in finished products, reflecting growing concerns over consumer safety and environmental impact. Industry experts suggest that the upcoming third revision will maintain the core framework of the standard but will introduce minor adjustments to certain details and performance indicators. The goal is to make the standard more relevant and practical for modern manufacturing needs. The final version of the third revision is expected to be completed by the end of this year, marking another step forward in China's commitment to high-quality, sustainable textile production.
