Xunke County's Red Agate Township has experienced over two decades of growth in the agate industry. Initially characterized by unstructured and low-level development, it has evolved into a key cultural industry project within the county. Red agate has now become more than just a material—it carries deep cultural significance and serves as a meaningful form of artistic expression.
Today, the number of red agate handicraft enterprises in the county has grown from just three to over a dozen, forming a well-established deep-processing industry. The township produces four main categories of red agate products: display, leisure, jewelry, and commemorative collections. Annual sales have exceeded 10 million yuan, and Xunke’s red agate crafts have gained international attention, becoming a highlight at events like the China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industry Expo.
Xunke is nationally recognized as the "Red Agate Town," known for its high-quality natural red agate. This agate is prized worldwide for its density, hardness, gloss, and even coloration. In the industry, there's a saying: “The world’s agate, Chinese agate looks to Xunke.†However, the journey wasn’t smooth. In the early 1990s, the industry was still emerging, with many small-scale companies popping up rapidly. Farmers began mining agate for profit, often without proper planning or sustainability in mind. This led to overexploitation, a sharp drop in prices, and the collapse of many small businesses.
Amid this chaos, Hong Yujuan, who would later become a leading figure in the industry, saw potential. At the time, she worked at the Xunke County Transportation Company. She believed that Xunke’s agate, with its unique hardness and transparency, had a strong market value. She took a bold step by purchasing an agate plant under the Public Security Bureau for 87,000 yuan and established the Swan Agate Factory. Instead of rushing into mass production, she focused on technological upgrades and modern management practices.
Through thorough market research, she realized that quality raw materials were essential for long-term success. To ensure sustainable development, she advocated for careful and responsible mining. In 1996, the factory invested in a Japanese computer engraving machine, marking a turning point in the industry. Products like seals and chess sets moved away from hand-carving, while high-end packaging from Guangzhou and Wenzhou improved product quality. By branding the Swan Agate name and registering trademarks, the company achieved rapid growth.
Starting with an initial investment of 80,000 yuan, the factory now has total assets of 650,000 yuan. Over the years, the couple worked tirelessly, growing the team to nearly 30 employees. From simple agate products, the factory expanded into arts and crafts, plaque processing, and more. With the introduction of advanced technologies such as computer inkjet and sandblasting, the company developed over 1,000 varieties across ten different product lines, significantly boosting the competitiveness of the Xunkan brand.
Today, the company has opened chain stores in cities like Shanghai, Xiamen, Harbin, Qiqihar, and Heihe, achieving efficient operations and economies of scale.
In Baoshan Township, Xunke County, there is the only provincial Agate Stone Nature Reserve in the country. Covering 1,352 hectares, the reserve protects over 300,000 tons of natural agate. Current annual extraction is less than 100 tons, ensuring sufficient raw material reserves for future development. However, sustainable development and resource protection remain a priority. Local authorities have raised awareness among miners about conservation, trained agate carving professionals, and guided the industry toward scientific and sustainable growth.
