Rainy weather in Henan causes cotton to fall

January 13, 2019

Since the beginning of summer this year, the average precipitation in Henan Province has reached 375.2 millimeters (June 1 – August 24), which is 1.2% more than normal (370.6 mm) over the same period. However, the spatial and temporal distribution of precipitation is not uniform, and the western and southwestern provinces, The precipitation in the north is relatively high, while the precipitation in other areas is less.

In particular, from August 18 to August 25, the province experienced obvious cloudy and rainy weather, and most of the regions have more than 5 days of overcast days. Combined with the partial wet soil, it has a certain adverse impact on the formation of autumn crop yields. Affected areas are mainly distributed in areas north of the Huaihe River in our province, which have little impact on the southern part of Henan and the eastern part of Henan, and have generally had little impact on grain yield in Henan Province.

According to the analysis, from August 18 to August 25, there was a wide range of precipitation weather in the province. The rainfall in northern Henan, southwestern Henan, and central Henan is more than 100mm. Most of the southern Henan, Henan and Southeast Henan less precipitation, below 20mm. During the period, sunshine hours in most parts of the province were mostly below 40 hours, especially in most parts of western Henan, eastern part of northern Henan, and parts of southwestern Henan where there were fewer days for photography. Below 6 hours, the average daily sunshine was less than 1 hour. Dianchi Lake, Mengjin, Luoning, and Yiyang have no sunshine even at 4 stations. Over 70% of the province's overcast days have more than 5 days of cloudy days. Most of the south of Henan, the east of Henan, and the southeast of Henan have enough photos for more than 40 hours.

According to the analysis of average soil relative humidity in the 10-50cm average soil moisture monitoring station on August 26, only the Yunan and the northern parts of Henan Province are suitable for the general public, and most of the other areas are wet.

The cloudy and rainy weather mainly affected the growth of autumn crops in the area north of the Huaihe River in the province, but the impact on agriculture in southern Henan was not obvious. At present, corn in most parts of our province is in the grouting-milk ripening stage, which will postpone the development of summer maize in most parts of the province. In the most parts of northern Henan, parts of western Henan, and parts of southwestern Henan, the rainy weather will cause crops with less photosynthetic products and stems. Slender stalks will eventually affect the yield. At the same time, due to over-wet soil in the field, the root system will suffer from hypoxia, premature aging of stems and leaves, and it will also breed various pests and diseases.

At present, the cotton in Henan Province is in an anthesis period, and the rainy weather can easily cause the fall and fall buds, which will reduce the percentage of sitting peaches and affect the cotton yield and quality.

To this end, meteorologists recommend:

1. Strengthen field management. Corn should pay attention to early removal of empty rods and dead leaves, improve ventilation and light transmission conditions, and increase lodging resistance. Cotton should be pruned in time to keep the plants transparent.

2. Timely drainage. After the weather is fine, it must be timely drained, cultivated and scattered to enhance the vitality of the root system.

3. After the precipitation process is completed, according to the growth status of corn, it can be timely supplemented with nourishment materials, and potassium dihydrogen phosphate and organic fertilizer can be sprayed on the foliage to increase the photosynthetic efficiency of crops and reduce the damage caused by lack of light.

4. Strengthen pest control. After the rainfall, soil moisture is too high and it is easy to breed pests and diseases. All localities should pay close attention to the development of pests and diseases and apply pesticides in a timely manner.

5. Properly extend the harvest period. This year, the development period of maize has been postponed slightly more than usual. During the mature period, the harvest period can be appropriately delayed in various places according to actual conditions to increase the final harvest yield.
