EU says 95% of counterfeit shoes from China

August 26, 2025

On September 6th, EU Commissioner for Customs Affairs, Stéphane Smetah, announced that the European Union will soon urge China to implement more effective measures in combating counterfeit goods. The EU expressed concerns that the proliferation of fake products threatens to undermine the bilateral relationship between the two economic powers. According to a report from French International Radio on September 4th, Smetah, currently visiting Shanghai, acknowledged that the EU and China have established a solid foundation for cooperation in fighting counterfeiting. However, she emphasized that current efforts remain insufficient to address the growing problem. Smetah mentioned that she will present the 2009 EU Customs Annual Report to Chinese officials and use it as a basis for further discussions. The report revealed that last year, EU customs authorities intercepted and investigated 118 million counterfeit items, with 64% originating from China. Officials are increasingly worried about the rising volume of fake goods coming from the country. Although the EU and China have enhanced their collaboration in this area and introduced new inspection mechanisms, the EU believes that more needs to be done. Strengthening cooperation and implementing additional anti-counterfeit measures are seen as essential steps forward. According to an AFP report, the majority of counterfeit goods seized by EU customs come from China, with 90% of these being fake products manufactured there. The EU also noted that Chinese companies are not only victims of counterfeiting but also suffer significant losses due to the widespread circulation of fake goods in the market. Smetah stated that she plans to submit a proposal to enhance customs inspections across the EU by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the EU’s Internal Market and Services Commissioner, Cecilia Malmström, is expected to introduce complementary measures aimed at improving enforcement and protecting consumers. As the issue of counterfeiting continues to grow, both the EU and China face increasing pressure to find long-term solutions that protect intellectual property rights and ensure fair trade practices.
