In this latest chapter of our Sewn by Kids series, we’re thrilled to introduce Laura from Cotton Reel Studio. Laura took a creative approach to teaching her daughter how to sew—starting with hand-drawn lines on paper. Once she felt confident, Laura guided her through making the free Lazy Days Skirt pattern in just one day. Let’s dive into how Laura helped her daughter master the art of sewing.

I initially got into sewing when my oldest was still a baby. One of my earliest projects was creating an Ice Cream blouse and matching Puppet Show shorts. Ever since, sewing has been a passion. My daughters have always been surrounded by fabrics, patterns, and sewing machines.
During the school holidays, I thought it would be fun to teach my eldest (now seven) how to sew and make a skirt for an upcoming beach trip. She was eager to try out the sewing machine and couldn’t wait to get started.
To ease her into it, I drew straight lines, squares, and squiggles on paper so she could practice stitching before we moved on to her actual skirt project. She thoroughly enjoyed this part of the process. Choosing colorful threads became one of her favorite activities, and it gave her a chance to practice controlling the machine. She also discovered she liked operating the foot pedal at a slower speed.
The Lazy Days Skirt itself was relatively simple to construct, featuring just one side seam and a ribbon hem. To assist her, I created a makeshift seam guide by attaching a strip of washi tape to the machine. Sewing the channel for the elastic proved slightly trickier and demanded more focus, but she handled it admirably with minimal guidance. The only assistance I provided was inserting the elastic and stitching the ends together.
After completing her skirt, she was incredibly proud of herself and wore it proudly to the beach. Though she hasn’t attempted another sewing project yet, she often asks to “sew pictures†on paper as a reminder of those initial lessons.
