Hello, everyone! Just wanted to share how things went with S starting 5th grade in Madrid today. As I wiped away my tears (yes, I cried again), I thought I'd give you a quick update. (For the record, does every mom cry on the first day of school? The past couple of years I've been okay—probably because we just sent her off on the school bus and waved goodbye. But meeting the teacher? That always gets me emotional.)
When we decided to move to Spain for a year, we chose this path partly so S could become fluent in Spanish. People assumed we'd send her to an international school, but immersing her in the language seemed like the best way to learn. So early on, we decided to enroll her in a local public school.
Today we found out she's been accepted into the school at the top of our list—a 15-minute walk from home through one of Madrid's oldest neighborhoods. It's an incredible feeling knowing she'll be attending such a historic place. Did you know this school dates back to 1543? (Our daughter’s NYC school celebrated its 110th anniversary last year, but that's nothing compared to this!) Now the curriculum is bilingual, with half the day in English and the other half in Spanish. We're hopeful she'll pick up the language quickly, though I'm counting on her classmates to chat with her in Spanish during lunch and recess. For now, they’re all speaking English with her since she's new.
Since Spanish students are assigned to schools in April, we had to wait until September 1st to officially register. The process wasn’t easy—it involved multiple trips to different government offices to gather all the necessary documents. (Sounds like typical Spanish bureaucracy, right?) Even after registering, we didn't find out which school she'd been assigned to until today—right as classes started. I think they wait until the last minute to ensure they have an accurate headcount.
Once we met her teacher, she invited us into the classroom to meet the kids. Wow, fifth graders are really tall now! Naturally, I got choked up again. It’s surreal to think we're finally here and this is all happening. I have no doubt it’s going to be a fantastic year for S—and for all of us too.
Just a few of you, including some of our dear friends and clients, helped us understand the registration process and even recommended schools. Thank you so much for your emails, messages, and phone calls! Your support means the world to us. I’m still pinching myself over everything that’s happening.
Oh, and one last thing—her new school has a super strict uniform policy, including gym clothes. No sewing school outfits this year, which is fine by me since I’m already swamped with work. I’ll share pictures of the uniforms soon!
How was your first day of school if you're in the Northern Hemisphere? Was it full of emotion, relief, or maybe sadness that summer’s over?
(And yes, her new school is strict about everything—even gym wear!)
Hope you enjoyed reading this little update. Let me know if you have any questions or stories to share about your own first days of school!
