fifth grade in madrid

June 09, 2025

Hello, everyone! Just wanted to share something special with you. Today marked the beginning of S's 5th-grade journey in Madrid. As I dried my tears (yes, I cried again), I thought I'd tell you all about it. It's funny how emotional I get when dropping her off on the first day. Teachers play such a vital role, and I feel so grateful for theirs—it always brings me to tears. When we decided to move to Spain for a year, we hoped it would help S become fluent in Spanish. Some folks assumed we'd send her to an international school where everything is in English, but immersing her completely seemed like the best approach. Early on, we chose a local public school instead. The school we're thrilled to have been accepted into is just a 15-minute walk from home, through one of Madrid's oldest neighborhoods. That's the path we'll take every morning now. [Insert image caption: "Heading to school"] This school, established by Carlos V back in 1543, is older than most schools around. In contrast, S's school in New York just turned 110 last year—still impressive, but not nearly as old as her new one! The bilingual program here ensures half the day is spent in English and the other half in Spanish. With luck, S should be near fluent within three months. Of course, her classmates speaking English with her now might slow things down, but we’re hopeful they’ll switch soon enough! [Insert image caption: "First day of fifth grade"] Once we finally registered S for school in September, it took several trips to different government offices to gather all the necessary paperwork. It’s just how things work here. Even after multiple appointments, there’s still more waiting for our resident cards. Once everything was sorted, we could choose our preferred schools, but assignments only came through today—day two of classes. Apparently, this delay helps schools know exactly how many students they’ll have before filling open slots. After settling S in, her teacher invited us into the classroom to meet the kids. Wow, fifth graders sure grow up fast! Naturally, I got misty-eyed again. It feels surreal being here, knowing it’s all real now. I’m confident it’ll be an amazing year for S—and an unforgettable experience for us all. That’s our little first-day-of-school story. Many of you, dear friends and customers, helped guide us through the registration process and school selection. Your emails, comments, and calls offering advice truly meant the world to us. Thank you so much for your support and encouragement—I keep pinching myself over this whole situation. Oh, and by the way, her new school has a strict uniform policy—even for gym class. So no sewing school clothes this year. Which is probably a good thing since I’ve been neglecting my own projects. I’ll share pictures of the uniforms soon! How was your first day of school, if you're in the Northern Hemisphere? Any mix of emotions? Relief? A tinge of sadness that summer's over? [Insert related posts section] It’s funny how life moves forward, isn’t it?
