Mask market chaos: exaggerating filter efficiency brand imitation

Prior to the implementation of the “Specifications”, there was no standard for protective masks that was specifically aimed at the general public.

At present, China's standards for masks include "Respiratory protective equipment self-absorbing filter type particulate respirator", "medical protective mask technical requirements", "medical surgical mask", etc., but all belong to labor protection and medical protection standards.

Recently, in Jingdong, Tmall and other e-commerce platforms to search for "fog-proof masks" as keywords, the implementation standards of different brands of masks are different. Some implement the above-mentioned domestic standards, some implement foreign standards, and some masks do not mark this.

Many masks have "filter efficiency" printed on the eye-catching package. However, some media have revealed this month that several masks of a certain supermarket in Beijing declared that “the removal rate is as high as 90% or more”. The actual removal rate was only 30% to 40%.

According to the Shanghai Bureau of Quality Supervision, disclosed in March this year, 69 batches of samples from Shanghai production companies, physical sales stores and online stores were tested and found that the minimum filtration efficiency of 54 batches of masks was lower than 90%, 28 batches of Masks contain formaldehyde, a carcinogenic substance.

The implementation of the "Regulations" will improve the non-compliance of the civilian respirator market.

According to the standard, the protection level of masks is divided into four levels from low to high: D level, C level, B level, and A level, which correspond to different air quality conditions.

For example, class A corresponds to "severe pollution" and is used when the concentration of PM2.5 reaches 500 micrograms per cubic meter; class D corresponds to "moderate or less pollution" and applies to situations where the concentration of PM2.5 is less than or equal to 150 micrograms per cubic meter. .

The “Specifications” has strict regulations on the packaging, labeling, storage, and transportation of masks. It requires that the labels contain “level of product protection effectiveness” and “execution standard number”.

China Industrial Textiles Industry Association led the drawing up of the "Code". Li Guimei, vice president of the association, said in an interview with reporters that the standard has 15 indicators, which determine the product from three aspects of safety, hygiene and protection. Moreover, with reference to the "Chinese Pharmacopoeia", strict regulations are also made on toxic and hazardous substances.

She said that many well-known brand companies at home and abroad have already carried out the R&D and production of masks according to the "Code" and sent them to third-party authoritative testing organizations for testing. A number of masks that meet the "Regulations" will be listed one after another. The association will also regularly publish a list of companies that meet the standards and cultivate brand pilot companies.

How to choose a mask? Filter layer is the key

Mask prices are affected by supply and demand or there will be no shortage

In addition to the protective effect, the price of masks is also a concern for many people, and some low-cost masks have a quality that is not relevant.

“We discovered during the procurement process that some masks cost only four or five cents apiece,” Cheng Xiqing said. However, these masks have the problem that the filtering efficiency is not up to standard and the airtightness is not good. Some filtering efficiency may be only 10%. After searching for “anti-fog masks” in Jingdong and sorting them by sales volume, the price of the top ten masks was between RMB 4 and RMB 10.

Cheng Xiqing said that in 2012, the domestic market for anti-fog and smog masks had just emerged. Some manufacturers had no preparation for the explosive demand of the civilian market. Masks were in short supply.

Li Guimei said that in the past, companies responded. When fog and haze weather was severe, the mask production volume per day had certain difficulties in supporting sales. However, nowadays, many manufacturers have already prepared for the development of materials, the improvement of technology, the design of mask styles, and the production and storage. If there is severe haze, there should be no shortage of masks.

She said that consumers have also learned about the regularity of smog weather and prepared appropriate protective measures such as wearing masks. They will no longer use the existing buying methods.
