The name of the diamond archive regent: the final glory of the Indian giant diamond

June 23, 2021

The Korul mine in Golkonda, a small country in eastern India. It is a pity that this mine was exhausted early under the greed of people, and the last famous diamond produced was the Regent King Diamond.

The Regent Diamond is a 140.64-carat vintage pillow-cut diamond, a white diamond with a hint of blue – making this 315-year-old diamond look particularly dazzling.

In 1698, a slave working in the mine discovered a 410-carat rough diamond. In order to avoid the search, he made an accident and left a huge wound in his leg, and then hid the diamond in it. His "smart" move did deceive the slave owner, but this did not bring him good luck. He showed the jewel to a British captain and asked the latter to take himself to a free country. Once he made it, he sold the diamond to the captain at half price. The captain of course took the slave to his own boat, but on the way to Mumbai, greed drove the captain to kill the slave, took the diamond for himself, and sold it to a named Jamchund's Indian diamond dealer.

In 1701, Madras (now known as Chennai) Governor St. George's Governor Thomas Pitt bought the diamond from the Indian diamond dealer. The Governor’s best known story is to buy Regent Diamonds for £20,400 (presumably equivalent to £2,803,320 in 2013) and find someone to cut this famous diamond into what it is today. To this day, there are people who call the Regent Diamond a PittDiamond and the Governor "Diamond" Pitt.

Of course, as a businessman, the ultimate goal of "diamond" Pete to buy this diamond is to make money. After selling unsuccessful members of the European royal family including King Louis XIV, the diamond was finally sold to the French Regent in 1717, the Duke of Orleans, Philip II, and the Regent Diamond was named. "Diamond" Pete's Pitt diamonds finally lost £135,000 (presumably equivalent to £17,385,050 in 2013), roughly speaking, the profit margin is over a terrible 500%.

Since then, this diamond has become one of the most important royal jewels in France. In 1722, the diamond was set in the crown of King Louis XV. In 1775, the diamond was set in a new crown of Louis XVI. Of course, Queen Marie Antoinette, who spends money, won't miss the opportunity to wear this diamond – the Regent King Diamond appears on her hat.

In 1792, the extravagant life of Queen Marie Antoinette, the "woman of the deficit", eventually led to the outbreak of the French Revolution - of course she might just be lying. In the revolutionary wave of Paris, Regent Diamond and other French royal jewels were stolen together, but it was discovered shortly afterwards and returned to the French Republic. In the face of the crisis of the anti-French coalition and the royalist party, this diamond was once used as a collateral by the governor of the First Republic of France and later the government. Until 1801, Napoleon Bonaparte completely redeemed the diamond. Back.

In 1812, according to the design of the goldsmiths Odiot, Bouvet and Marie-Etienne Nitot, the diamond appeared on the double-edged sword of Napoleon I. After Napoleon's death, his wife, the Austrian woman, Mary Louisa, brought the diamond back to Austria, but the father of the female grandfather quickly returned the diamond to France. Since then, it has appeared as a royal jewel in the crown of Louis XVIII, Charles X and Napoleon III.

Today, the dazzling Regent Diamond is displayed in the Louvre in France, just like the peach-colored Otans Diamond. It lay there quietly, along with other eye-catching royal jewels, silently telling the history of France's ups and downs.
