According to an analysis by American Foton Corporation on August 17, China's reserve cotton prices have continued to decline in recent days, exerting downward pressure on domestic spot prices. With the upcoming release of new cotton, there are concerns that the supply from reserves may not be sufficient to meet demand. On August 16, the spot price for Xinjiang 229 cotton stood at 19,300 yuan per ton, while 329 cotton was priced between 18,880 and 19,000 yuan per ton—down by 200 to 300 yuan compared to the start of the storage release period. On August 17, China’s average reserve price fell by 300 to 500 yuan per ton relative to the spot market, prompting local traders to adjust their pricing strategies accordingly. As spot prices declined, some hesitant textile mills began to shift their sourcing efforts toward the spot market. In this context, questions are being raised about how long the current stockpile will last and whether the 600,000-ton reserve will be enough to cover the transition period. Over the past six trading days, China has released a total of 89,695 tons. If the government does not increase the supply of reserve cotton or if transaction volumes do not decrease in the coming weeks, it is estimated that the 600,000-ton reserve could be fully sold by early October. This timing coincides with the period before the new cotton harvest begins, potentially leading to a temporary supply shortage and pushing up domestic cotton prices during the early stages of the new season. With the market closely watching these developments, traders and analysts are keeping a close eye on government policies and supply dynamics, as any disruption could have significant implications for both domestic and international cotton markets.
